Reversed Tarot Cards: What They Mean and How to Read Them
By the Sussa team · October 21, 2026 · 5 min read

A reversed card is one that lands upside down when you draw it. Plenty of readers use them, plenty don't, and both are fine. If reversals feel like too much while you're learning, read every card upright for a few months. Nothing is lost.
If you do want to use them, the main thing to know is that reversed does not mean bad. Death upright is about an ending, and reversed it's often about resisting one. Nobody dies in either case.
Four ways to read a reversed card
- Blocked or inward. The energy of the card is there but stuck, or it's happening inside you instead of out loud. The Star reversed can be hope that's hard to feel right now.
- Too much or too little. The upright meaning in excess, or missing. Strength reversed might be self-doubt, or might be forcing your way through.
- Delayed. The thing is coming but not yet. Common with cards of action or arrival.
- The opposite. Sometimes a card really flips: The Sun upright is clarity, reversed is clouded thinking.
Pick one way and use it consistently. Switching methods mid-reading is how reversals start to feel random.
Let the position help you
In a spread, the position tells you which of the four fits. A reversed card in the "challenge" slot is often the obstacle itself, while a reversed card in "advice" can say to slow down or look inward. Read reversals together with their neighbours, not alone.
Do you have to use reversals?
No. Many experienced readers get all the nuance they need from upright cards plus the surrounding cards. If you draw by flipping the deck over, you're also more likely to flip cards by accident, so check how you shuffle. We cover that in how to shuffle tarot cards.
Mark any card as reversed and read the meaning for that position.
Open the reading helperTip: One practical test: read a spread both ways. If the reversed version tells you something the upright one didn't, keep reversals. If it just muddies things, drop them for now.
