How to Read Tarot for Yes or No Questions

Tarot is better at describing a situation than answering yes or no. Still, it's the question people ask most, and there is a reasonable way to do it as long as you know what it can and can't tell you.

A simple method

  1. Write the question so it has a clear yes or no. "Should I accept this job offer?" works better than "What about the job?"
  2. Draw one card.
  3. Cards with a positive, forward energy lean yes: The Sun, The Star, The World, the aces. Cards about obstacles, endings or loss lean no: The Tower, the Ten of Swords, the Five of Pentacles.
  4. Reversed cards soften or flip the lean.
  5. Many cards are in between. "Maybe, but…" is a legitimate answer.

What this can't tell you

A single card can't weigh a whole decision. It can show you your gut feeling, though, and that's usually the useful part. If you draw a card that leans no and you feel disappointed, that's information about what you wanted.

A better move: draw three

If the answer matters, use a three card spread: what supports it, what's against it, and what you should know. That gives you reasons, not just a verdict. See how to read a 3 card spread.

Don't redraw

If you keep drawing until you get the answer you want, you're not asking the cards anything. Take the first draw. Some people only allow one question per day for this reason, and Sussa's yes or no ritual does the same: same question, same day, same answer.

Tip: Avoid questions about other people's private feelings or things you can't act on. Ask about what you can do instead.

Try a one card or three card reading for your question.
